Social Skills Groups
Fall session will begin the week of August 23, 2010
Winter session will begin
the week
of January 31, 2011
The goals for these interactive groups are to create a safe environment where group members develop a sense of belonging and to learn, step by step, how to relate to others in different social situations outside of the group.
- Participants will be grouped based on their ages and social skills development. Lessons will be tailored to meet the specific needs of the children or teens in each group.
- Lessons can range from teaching basic skills such as how to greet someone and listening position, to more advance skills such as how to maintain a conversation, how to show an understanding of others’ feeling, and problem solving in difficult social situations. Older students will participate in community outings.
- Recognizing feelings, self-regulation, and stress management will be included in each group session.
- Various activities such as modeling correct behavior, role play, videos and games will be utilized to accommodate a variety of learning styles.
- Sensory activities addressing the vestibular, tactile, auditory and proprioceptive systems will be an integral part of each session.
- Each group will be limited to 6 participants. There is availability for elementary through high school students.
- The cost is $545.00 for 12 weekly sessions. Payment plans are available. A nonrefundable registration fee of $50.00 is due two weeks prior to the group starting.
The groups for middle and high school students will be led by Naomi Fields, a Licensed Professional Counselor with a background in working with children with special needs, and Dana Harris, an Occupational Therapist who works with a variety of children with sensory weaknesses and diagnoses on the autism spectrum. Groups for preschool and elementary students will be led by LaBrita Cash-Basket a Speech and Language Pathologist and Maretta Mincey an Occupational Therapist. Both have experiences in working with children in early intervention, elementary and middle school as well as experiences in sensory integration weaknesses and a variety of diagnoses under the PDD umbrella.
