Depression or the Blues?

All of us feel down in the dumps or "blue" from time to time. After a talk with a friend, a good night's rest, or even a good cry, the blues disappear and we are back to our normal busy, but happy life-is-okay feelings. For others, feelings of hopelessness, sadness or emptiness are a way of life. A depressive disorder is a "whole-body" illness, involving the body, mood, and thoughts. It affects the way you eat and sleep, the way you feel about yourself, and the way you think about things.

One type of depression that is often overlooked is Dysthymia. This disorder involves long-term, chronic symptoms that do not disable, but keeps the individual from functioning at his or her highest level. Often the person lacks energy and does not experience joy, even with events the person has anticipated and looked forward to, such a moving into her dream house, or getting the long awaited promotion, or the vacation of his dreams. Dysthymia may also be marked by unexplained feelings of anger and loneliness. There are times the person may feel "waves" of sadness come over him or her for no apparent reason. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you are not alone. One in five people will have depression at some time in his or her lifetime. Depressive symptoms are the most common complaint heard in the doctors' office.

If you think you may have depression, it is important to consult with your family doctor or a mental health specialist such as a psychologist, social worker or counselor. Make sure you are enjoying life; you owe it to yourself and those who care about you.
